Ingredients

  • 1 baked pie crust
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

Prepare dry ingredients

  • In a saucepan, mix sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch and salt. Stir well so everything combines evenly before cooking.

Add milk

  • Slowly pour milk into the pan. Whisk continuously to avoid lumps and create a smooth mixture.

Cook the mixture

  • Place pan on medium heat. Stir constantly until mixture thickens and becomes smooth and glossy in texture.

Add egg yolks

  • Lightly beat egg yolks in a bowl. Slowly add a little hot mixture into yolks, then return to pan.

Cook again

  • Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes while stirring. This makes the filling thick and rich.

Add butter and vanilla

  • Remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla extract. Stir until butter melts and mixture becomes silky.

Fill the crust

  • Pour chocolate filling into baked pie crust. Spread evenly using a spoon or spatula.

Chill the pie

  • Place pie in refrigerator for at least 2 hours. This helps the filling set properly.

Garnish and serve

  • Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Slice and serve chilled for best taste.

Notes

  • Use dark cocoa for deeper flavor
  • Add espresso powder for rich taste
  • Use graham cracker crust for variation
  • Add chocolate chips for extra texture
  • Use half-and-half for creamier filling
  • Chill overnight for best results
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon for twist
