Ingredients
  

  • 1 corned beef brisket 4–5 pounds
  • 1 seasoning packet usually included
  • 8 small potatoes
  • 4 carrots peeled and cut
  • 1 head cabbage cut into wedges
  • 1 onion quartered
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 6 cups water or beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter optional

Instructions
 

Rinse the brisket

  • Rinse the corned beef under cold water to remove extra salt.

Prepare the pot

  • Place brisket in a Dutch oven. Add seasoning packet, onion, garlic and water.

Start cooking

  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and cover.

Simmer slowly

  • Cook for about 3 hours until the meat starts becoming tender.

Add potatoes

  • Place potatoes and carrots into the pot.

Add cabbage

  • Add cabbage wedges during the final 30 minutes.

Check tenderness

  • The brisket should be fork-tender before slicing.

Rest and serve

  • Let meat rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain.
