  • 1.5 kg pork shoulder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

Prepare the pork

  • Pat pork dry with paper towel. This helps seasoning stick better and improves flavor.

Season the meat

  • Mix brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Rub evenly over pork.

Sear the pork

  • Heat oil in a pan. Sear pork on all sides until browned for deeper flavor.

Transfer to cooker

  • Place pork in slow cooker or pot. This is where it will cook slowly.

Add liquids

  • Pour BBQ sauce, chicken broth and vinegar over pork. This keeps it moist and flavorful.

Cook slowly

  • Cook on low heat for about 6 hours until pork is very tender and easy to shred.

Shred the pork

  • Use two forks to shred the pork into small pieces. It should fall apart easily.

Mix with sauce

  • Stir shredded pork into the cooking sauce for extra flavor and moisture.

Serve hot

  • Serve warm and enjoy the juicy and flavorful pulled pork.

Notes

  • Use pork shoulder for best results
  • Add smoked paprika for deeper flavor
  • Use homemade BBQ sauce
  • Add onions or garlic to cooker
  • Cook overnight for convenience
  • Use buns for sandwiches
  • Add coleslaw for crunch
