Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a sheet pan lightly. This helps the cake not stick and bake evenly.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Stir well so everything combines nicely and evenly.

Prepare Chocolate Mixture

  • In a saucepan, melt butter with water and cocoa powder. Heat until boiling, then remove from heat immediately.

Combine Wet and Dry

  • Pour the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix quickly until smooth and no lumps remain in batter.

Add Buttermilk and Eggs

  • Add buttermilk, eggs and vanilla extract. Mix everything well until the batter becomes smooth and slightly thin.

Pour into Pan

  • Pour the batter into your prepared sheet pan. Spread evenly using a spatula for a smooth surface.

Bake the Cake

  • Bake for 18 to 20 minutes. Check with a toothpick. If it comes clean, your cake is ready.

Start Frosting

  • While cake bakes, melt butter in a saucepan. Add cocoa powder and milk. Bring to a gentle boil.

Add Sugar and Vanilla

  • Remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy texture forms.

Add Pecans

  • Stir in chopped pecans if you like. They add crunch and flavor to the soft chocolate frosting.

Frost the Cake

  • Pour warm frosting over hot cake. Spread quickly so it covers the cake evenly before it sets.

Let It Set

  • Allow the cake to cool for 30 minutes. The frosting will firm up and create a soft, shiny layer.

Notes

  • Use fresh buttermilk for best flavor and soft texture
  • Do not overbake the cake to keep it moist
  • Add cinnamon for a warm, unique taste
  • Replace pecans with walnuts if preferred
  • Use espresso powder to enhance chocolate flavor
  • Try adding chocolate chips for extra richness
  • Always frost the cake while it is still warm
