Ingredients

For the Marinade

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary chopped

For the Tri Tip

  • 2 to 3 pounds tri tip roast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Prepare the Marinade

  • Add soy sauce, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic, mustard and spices into a large mixing bowl together.

Mix the Ingredients

  • Whisk the marinade until the sugar dissolves completely. This creates smooth flavor throughout the entire meat evenly.

Prepare the Tri Tip

  • Pat the tri tip dry using paper towels. Trim extra fat if needed before marinating the beef properly.

Add Meat to Marinade

  • Place tri tip into a zip-top bag. Pour the prepared marinade over the meat completely and seal tightly.

Refrigerate the Meat

  • Place the marinating tri tip inside the refrigerator. Let it soak for at least eight hours for deeper flavor.

Remove Before Cooking

  • Take the tri tip out thirty minutes before cooking. This helps the meat cook more evenly and stay juicy.

Preheat the Grill

  • Heat the grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Brush lightly with oil to prevent sticking during cooking time.

Season the Meat

  • Remove tri tip from marinade and pat lightly dry. Sprinkle salt evenly over both sides before grilling carefully.

Sear the Tri Tip

  • Place the meat on the hot grill. Cook each side several minutes until a flavorful crust develops beautifully.

Continue Cooking

  • Lower the heat slightly and continue cooking until desired doneness. Use a thermometer for accurate internal temperature checking.

Rest the Meat

  • Remove cooked tri tip from heat. Let it rest for ten minutes before slicing to keep juices inside.

Slice and Serve

  • Slice the meat against the grain into thin pieces. Serve warm with favorite sides and extra sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Marinate overnight for maximum tenderness and flavor.
  • Add red pepper flakes for spicy heat.
  • Use fresh herbs for stronger aroma.
  • Grill over charcoal for smoky flavor.
  • Add lime juice for fresh tangy taste.
  • Do not overcook the tri tip.
  • Slice against the grain for tender bites.
  • Use leftover meat for sandwiches or tacos.
