Ingredients
  

  • 4 large potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions
 

Preheat the oven

  • Set your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish lightly with butter or oil to prevent sticking.

Prepare the potatoes

  • Wash, peel, and slice potatoes very thin using a knife or mandoline for even cooking.

Cook onion and garlic

  • Melt butter in a saucepan. Add onion and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook for one minute.

Make the sauce

  • Add flour and stir for one minute. Slowly pour milk and cream while whisking until smooth and thick.

Add cheese and seasoning

  • Add cheddar cheese, salt, pepper and paprika. Stir until cheese melts and sauce becomes creamy.

Layer the potatoes

  • Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some sauce over them evenly.

Repeat layers

  • Continue layering potatoes and sauce until all ingredients are used. Finish with sauce on top.

Cover and bake

  • Cover the dish with foil. Bake for 40 minutes until potatoes are tender.

Bake uncovered

  • Remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes until top is golden and bubbly.

Rest and serve

  • Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley and enjoy warm.
